The Lindheimer Observatory was torn down when it was determined that the costs of asbestos removal, new air handlers and replacement of the peeling lead-based exterior paint could not be justified in light of the limited use of Lindheimer and the poor viewing conditions caused by lake haze and Chicago lights. The Lindheimer telescopes were donated to Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona.
