Speaker: Professor Matthew Bailes (Swinburne, Australia)

“Public Outreach in 3 Dimensions and the impact of software correlators in precision pulsar timing.”

Using 3D virtual reality technologies I will describe some of the novel public outreach technologies developed by the Swinburne Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing, and use them to demonstrate some science we are pursuing with software correlators in the area of millisecond pulsar timing. Since its discovery in 1992, PSR J0437--4715 has been timed by increasingly sophisticated instrumentation at the Parkes radio telescope in Australia. The Parkes timing programme with its phenomenally accurate results has implications for everything from the solar system, to General Relativity and the cosmological distance scale.
