"A Neutral Hydrogen Survey of the Local Universe"

Prof. Riccardo Giovanelli
Cornell University

ALFALFA, the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey, is currently underway. It surveys the neutral Hydrogen emission of extragalactic objects in the 21 cm spectral line, eventually covering 7000 square degrees of sky, using the ALFA feed array at the 305-meter radio telescope at Arecibo.  Observations started in February 2005 and completion of the survey will require 5 calendar years. A number of science issues will be addressed by the survey, from the cosmic abundance of optically faint or inactive galaxies, to the determination of the galaxy merger rate, the HI cross section in the local Universe, environmental variations of the HI Mass function, High Velocity Clouds, etc. Preliminary results of the survey will be presented and prospects for participation in the follow-up activities discussed.
