This conference marked the 10th anniversary of the discovery of the first extrasolar planet around a solar-like star (51 Pegasi). Many significant advances have occurred in this field during the past decade, including the introduction of fundamentally new theoretical paradigms for the formation and evolution of planetary systems as well as countless discoveries of new extrasolar planetary systems that have challenged many accepted models for planet formation. A number of exciting new scientific results were announced for the first time at the meeting, including many of the first observational results from the Spitzer Space Telescope. The conference was sponsored by the Aspen Center for Physics, the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Energy, the NASA Astrobiology Institute, and the NASA Origins Program. |
