April 24 at 4PM in the 2nd Floor Conference Room in Dearborn Speaker: Daniel Fabrycky (Harvard CfA) “What Transiting Extrasolar Planets can Teach us about the Dynamics of Planetary Systems” One-tenth of known extrasolar planets transit their host stars, and this is the set for which we have unambiguous mass measurements, planetary radii, atmospheric information, etc. However, no secure planetary companions of this set are yet known. I will propound various dynamical theories regarding the orbital mechanics of two-planet systems and the spins of their hosts, then show how these theories will soon be tested by observations of transiting planets. |
